The role works within a matrix structure, working with the Peru exploration team while functionally reporting to the Manager Geophysicist in Santiago.
The role is accountable for the provision of high quality geophysics support to BHP´s copper exploration activity in Peru and other selected areas of South America. The role will be responsible for defining new survey areas, designing the optimum application of geophysical technology to exploration challenges and monitoring of surveys for safety, data quality, production and interpretation.
Ensure safety leadership through own behaviours and working collaboratively with others to ensure zero harm.
Provide input and advice on the identification and evaluation of greenfield discovery opportunities and motivate for geophysical surveys to assist in the generation of new high quality targets.
Ensure appropriate, fit for purpose selection of geophysical techniques, data processing methods and interpretation practices.
Coach and mentor non-geophysical staff on the understanding of geophysical techniques and their limitations.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with external geophysical consultants and contractors.
Monitor safety and data QC of geophysical surveys.
Collaborate with other team members to ensure the team has a full understanding of exploration challenges and an integrated approach to data interpretation.
Share best practice geophysical skills and workflows with the broader BHP geophysical community.
Complete capture, analysis, interpretation and storage of data to required standards.
Support pragmatic innovation and technology related to geophysics.
About You
A Bachelor (B. Sc. App. or equivalent) in geophysics with a higher degree preferred.
Visible safety leadership
Minimum 10 years of relevant, hands-on, experience in a multi-disciplinary minerals exploration environment at scales ranging from regional studies to detailed deposit scale
Demonstrated technical leadership and experience
A motivated and energetic person with the ability to effectively communicate and influence through their technical expertise
Extensive field experience in a variety of geophysical techniques and a willingness to spend significant time in the field at exploration sites.
Able to use forward modelling to demonstrate that planned geophysical surveys are fit for purpose.
Experience in multiple mineral deposit types
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in use of common geophysical software packages to develop geological models
