We specialize infact-finding, legal action against perpetrators of human rights and environmental violations, trainingfor Indigenous organizations, and the training of Indigenous lawyers and leaders. Through thesestrategies, EarthRights seeks to end these abuses and provide real solutions for affectedpopulations, promoting and protecting human and environmental rights in the communities wherewe work.**Brief job description**:The Staff Attorney is a highly qualified professional committed to the defense and protection of thehuman rights of Indigenous peoples and the environment, who is expected to formulate andimplement national and regional legal strategies to protect the rights of Indigenous communitiesand populations in the Amazon region, especially those affected by extractive industries,megaprojects, hydroelectric dams and criminalization of environmental defenders. The positionrequires substantial experience in national and international litigation, integrated with thedevelopment of advocacy strategies, making use of human rights norms, mechanisms andstandards, as well as environmental legislation.The position supports the development of current and future cases in our priority countries in theregion, as well as the strategic development of the Amazon legal work. The position also requiresbuilding external alliances with Indigenous leaders and federations, networking with local partners,providing legal capacity building and training to communities and their federations, Indigenouslawyers and legal promoters in the Amazon. In addition to working with local lawyers to supportlitigation at the national level in the priority countries, the Staff Attorney would also develop andsupport cases in regional human rights bodies and U.S. courts (in cooperation with EarthRights' U.S.legal team), when appropriate.**Primary responsibilities and expectations**:? Develop legal work and lead legal processes as assigned at the national or regional level, anddevelop innovative approaches to legal defense of human rights, as well as Indigenous peoples'rights and the rights of nature in the region.? Work with the Amazon Program legal team on an ongoing basis, and when required support theEarthRights U.S. legal team.? Work with lawyers, particularly Indigenous lawyers, as well as Indigenous leaders in defininglocal, regional and transnational strategies.? Lead training sessions with different actors working on human rights, environmental andIndigenous rights legal actions in Peru and the region.? Develop, in coordination with the person responsible for Education, training for Indigenouspeoples and communities leaders we work with.? Assist the organization in maintaining relationships and alliances with other NGOs, Indigenousfederations and other partners in the region, and participate in activities and meetings withthese allies and communities.? Write and communicate legal issues for different audiences, including working with theCommunications team, on public communications and engagement with donors and othersupporters.? Conduct legal research and support advocacy actions at different levels in conjunction withother organizations that enable the defense of Indigenous communities in the region.? Perform other responsibilities assigned to fulfill the institutional objectives, displaying goodjudgment and initiative.? Interact in a friendly and professional manner with multi-ethnic/multilingual staff and work withdifferent cultures and within diverse teams.Required Qualifications:? Professional law degree, with a current license to practice law in the United States.? At least 5 years of proven work experience related to legal defense and support to grassrootsorganizations and ethnic communities, Indigenous peoples and/or nationalities in the region.? Experience providing training to lawyers and/or legal technicians of grassroots organizationsand ethnic communities, Indigenous peoples and/or nationalities.? Knowledge of the Inter-American system and other international legal mechanisms.? Fluency in English and Spanish **(required)****Benefits**?
